‘Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are!’ is a nice quote that I read somewhere sometime a long while back.
Inference no: 1: The food that we eat has the ability to create and mould our character traits – mental/emotional and physical character traits!
Okay – let us take a step back and think about this for a few moments! We all manage to find those rare days when the entire family goes on an outdoor picnic for a couple of days or for a vacation. We have a great time – laughing, eating out, teasing our family members, looking at beautiful architecture or things etc.
Now revisit those days and tell me how well you slept that night. Deep exhausted happy refreshing slumber – right? Dreamless undisturbed deep sleep. And for days later we would have had happy dreams and years later we will always think of those days with fond memories and have a smile on our faces.
Inference no: 2: Physical exercise, good healthy nutritious food, fresh air and positive relationships = good sleep = less stress = good physical health.
That is the end of the physical realm part of the article.
Time to move to the mental realm.
Are we as careful of our mental diet as we are of our physical diet? Mental diet??? New word?? But the meaning is easy to decipher.
How careful are we about the kind of thoughts we feed our brain and heart on a regular basis?
What are the kinds of books we read?
What are the kinds of websites that we browse through?
What are the kinds of movies that we watch?
What are the kinds of TV serials that we watch regularly?
Here I must admit that I have observed a gradual change in my reading habits too along with age. It was all hot sizzling romance stories when I was a teenager. I wanted to know about the birds and the bees and how babies were made. Yeah…..it requires quite a bit of courage to write such stuff……but I was as normal a person as other girls my age. After I got married it was all about parenting and bringing up children. Then it progressed to thrillers and mysteries etc. Then it was to the English version of Indian epics. Now it has boiled down to reading various kinds of newspapers. More on this a little later…….
Assuming that all normal people will change slowly with time, their reading habits too will change.
I am not against movies or TV serials. Different people have different ways of unwinding. Most people are so addicted to their TV serials that they will change their dinner time and go on switch off mode when their favourite serial is being aired.
And I really get downright annoyed with the creators of serials that are regressive in nature. People are on switch off mode at that time. Everything is absorbed because they want to unwind. And this gradually seeps into their mental thinking process.
The women are portrayed as vamps or as highly dramatic characters. Serials go on for years. Hey folks….how about spending all that time going for a long walk along with your kids or spouse or chatting with your parents?
Watch a movie full of violence………and some kid on the street will be aping it within a week. Why can we not detach ourselves from what we are watching after we switch off the TV or walk out of the theatre? Why do the thoughts dwell with us for such a long period of time?
That is the mental diet that I was talking about. We need to be as careful about what we are feeding our brain and our heart as we are about feeding our mouths.
Our days cannot begin without the newspaper. I literally had to force my spouse to not read the newspaper while we drank our morning cup of coffee. I insisted that I wanted us to spend those few minutes together. Sometimes that is the only time that we get to spend during the entire day.
One look at the front page of the newspaper is enough to set the trend for the entire day. Objectively look at what I am trying to say. Politics on page 1, city news on page 2, sports on the last page, business and finance on the last three pages and somewhere in the middle towards the bottom we will find a spiritual thought provoking article.
The supplements are worse. Bikini clad heroines, which hero broke up with which third girl friend and the zodiac and something on fashion and something on eateries and a couple of articles on relationships sometimes.
The supplement is the first thing that everyone wants to read. Why? What kind of thoughts will this generate throughout the day? Are such supplements or such magazines worth keeping in our living rooms?
No, I don’t really think I am outdated or old fashioned. I am just asking some very simple honest questions. I would appreciate honest answers too. Just tell us what kind of thoughts we will have if we read all such negative things so early in the morning?
Perhaps you don’t read the newspaper. You browse through the news on the internet. Makes no difference.
Why would you want to know what Amitabh Bachan had to say about Shah Rukh Khan’s remarks? No I do respect Amitabh Bachan – because I feel he is quite a grounded person.
But hey buddy – I would be interested in knowing about your life…..only if I have the time and the inclination to do so. Actually WHEN I have the time and the inclination to do so.
And hey buddy – Here is the real deal………I am so busy leading my life on my terms that I do not really have time to catch up with what you folks have to say.
Yes, we need to be aware about what is happening around the world. But it needs to be projected the right way every day. Feed this kind of news to a nation like India every day……….and the collective thinking of people will get affected.
We cannot revamp the newspapers. We cannot change the news that flashes across our laptops and PCs…….we cannot change the quality of the soap operas that are telecast on TV…….but as mature, intelligent individuals……we can most certainly choose what we want to read in the newspaper, what kind of serials we want to watch and what kind of websites we want to browse through.
Our physical/mental/ emotional health depends on the kind of physical/mental and emotional diet that we feed our body/mind and heart with.
Revamp the newspaper? Revamp the TV serials? Revamp the news on the internet? Revamp the quality of our movies?
I would want to control myself first. I know I cannot bring about such great changes in the outside world.
So I choose to read only those pages that interest me at 2 in the afternoon. Sometimes I love to read the zodiac at the end of the day and get great pleasure when I have proved them completely wrong. Why would I want someone else to predict the quality of my day? I can create it myself.
But, I read this very zodiac column religiously every day. Have been doing so for years ever since I was a teenager. That is what I mean…….we should not let anyone else control us at a subconscious level. And all these negative masala filled news, movies, serials create negative thoughts. These thoughts seep into our subconscious minds and tend to affect our thoughts for a long long time……sadly we do not even realize the great oh so great damage that they are creating to the people at large.
The onus of our physical/mental and emotional health is ours and ours alone. So, let’s be as careful about our mental diet as we are about our physical diet.
Think about it for a long while. And I will be happy if even a handful of people just think about this article for some time.
