10 Most Powerful Super Computers in the World

/, Digital Literacy/10 Most Powerful Super Computers in the World

The list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world is constantly renewed with the continuous advances in technology. Let’s find out the ten greatest supercomputer configurations from the Top500.org list.

10. Shaheen II

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology holds Shaheen II, the number ten position for the third consecutive time. It is a beast machine that has a total of 200,000 processors, 5,536 performance petaflops with a relatively reasonable energy efficiency of 1954 megaflops per watt.

9. Hazel Hen

At Stuttgart University, Hazel Hen super computer holds the number nine spot. It is one of the two European computers that have entered this top 10 list. It has 5.64 petaflops of performance thanks to the 185 thousand processors.

8. Piz Daint

The Swiss National Computer Center has Piz Daint on the list since 2012, a supercomputer that has 73,808 of Tesla’s accelerated NVIDIA processors out of its 116,000 cores. With the 6.27 petaflops, it is the second efficient systems of the whole list, offering 2697 megaflops of performance per watt of power.

7. Trinity

Los Alamos National Laboratory has the Trinity computer, designed to help scientists predict and neutralize the distribution of nuclear weapons.

6. Mira

Located at the Aragonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Mira is a senior member of this list with its 786,000 processors, achieving an average of 8.59 petaflops in performance.

5. K Computer

The oldest member of this club is the Fujitsu K Computer, with a figure of 10.5 petaflops, located in the Institute RIKEN of Japan.

4. Sequoia

The most important batter at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is Sequoia, an IBM machine with 17.1 petaflops. Its power comes from almost 1,573,000 processors, and have the third best efficiency with 2177 megaflops per watt.

3. Titan

Titan is the centerpiece of computing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, pumping 17.6 petaflops for US Department of Energy research projects. It is one of the longest in the list after the K computer.

2. Tianhe-2

Tianhe-2 has finally been dethroned after six years in a row at the top of the list. It still has a super system with 3,120,000 processors that generate 33.9 petaflops sustained, but the Chinese government has removed the position relegating it to second place.

1. Sunway TaihuLight

Sunway TaihuLight is the largest and most powerful computer ever created. It sports more than 10 million processors; And with nearly triple the performance of its Chinese rival (93 petaflops), TaihuLight is also the most efficient away from the list, with 6051 megaflops per watt.
