Until a few years ago, it was hard to find lists of influential CEOs who were not headed by Steve Jobs, Apple’s respected co-founder. However, as the culture of startups gained ground, the admiration of technology executives met a new target: Elon Musk, known for participating in companies such as Tesla and SpaceX.
In a recent poll conducted by First Round Capital, Musk was voted the “most admirable leader” by 23% of the over 700 respondents surveyed. Other prominent names were Jeff Bezos of Amazon (10%) and Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg, named the most admired professional by 6% of the participants.
Among the motives that help in the popularity of the founder of Tesla is that he deals with issues considered “on the rise,” such as alternative energy sources and space exploration. In addition, he is known for making great statements that, in general, prove true – although he tends not to respect much any kind of release date.
Something that draws attention to the list is the absence of women in prominent positions, which participants attribute to the “lack of role models and mentors in the industry,” which also includes people from ethnic and religious minorities. The top woman in the survey this year was Facebook’s COO, Sheryl Sandberg, cited by only 1% of respondents.
